our history

    The Roswell Humane Society was established in July 1970 by a dedicated group of volunteers who recognized the need for an animal shelter in our community.  The society’s mission was to prevent animal cruelty, alleviate animal suffering, and promote humane education, a purpose that continues to this day.  Initially, our shelter was located at 118 East Hendricks, with a capacity for approximately 50 animals.  However, it soon became apparent that this facility was insufficient to meet the needs of our community.

    In 1979, two significant events revitalized our efforts:  the successful launch of our Thrift Shop, which allocated one-third of its proceeds to operational costs and two-thirds to a building fund, and a substantial donation from a sympathetic private foundation.  Subsequent fundraising endeavors and generous contributions, ranging from modest to substantial donations, enabled us to overcome numerous challenges. 

    Less than three years later, we inaugurated our own facility at 703 E. McGaffey, housing both our shelter and Thrift Shop.  Our no-kill shelter features 56 dog kennels, ten puppy cages, and 18 cat cages, providing a safe haven for animals in need.
